Orwell's Animal Farm

Orwell's Animal Farm

Animal Farm was also a Scathing Critique of Capitalism
I remember reading it in school, it was required reading, and it was understood that it was supposed to convey an anti-socialist message.

But ironically, the heroes of the story are all socialists, the first villain is a capitalist, the exploitation of the animals is a parable to the exploitation of workers under capitalism.

Then of course there's the critique of authoritarianism and cults of personality but the book which was supposed to teach me "Socialism bad" actually taught me "Capitalism bad, socialism is righteous, but we gotta be careful about authoritarian tendencies"

To be expected given that Orwell was a socialist, going so far as to have fought in the Spanish Civil War for a Marxist militia.

Orwell is a weird guy, by the end of his life he also sadly was a full collaborator with the UK's secret police and snitching on fellow writers and academics for socialist and communist opinions, riding full wave on the UK's wave of witch hunting Macarthism

Orwell was a socialist in the Spanish Civil War, but by the end of his life he was completely against socialism, as he spelled out completely in 1984. In the end of Animal Farm, he makes quite clear that the socialist 'hero' pigs were more oppressive than the 'capitalist' farmers.
