Actually, it might be a boy, but with their age, it could be either, or if you want to bring "THAT" up, both...
But honestly, I think they wanted to make them cute without them being a baby, but who knows.
Something like what the Angel does with the Apples that where offering does come to mind, a baby sneaking off with them isn't quite as cute as a child doing the same.
