Report a translation problem
In the original, you could and indeed kind of HAD to bum rush your way to each Monster Lair to get some breathing room. In the remake you have to wait until the game lets you destroy them. :s
Special mode is more like an individual 'score attack' mode per stage, with your stats and such scaling based off of the progress of the save file you used. The lack of ability to select divine difficulty outside of special mode after beating the game is a slight sour point too.
