Friends of Mineral Town (FoMT) is an "older" style of Story of Seasons (SoS) / Harvest Moon (HM) games...

"Older" means the older formula which captured the hearts of millions of players. FoMT is basically a classic SoS/HM game; it's excellent and close to the top in terms of highest ranked SoS/HM games (HM64, Back to Nature, etc).

It's about as good as a SoS/HM game that you can get on the PC without using emulation.

***I highly recommend FoMT!
Harvest moon Mineral town is more basic and easy, than this one.
This one has more stuff to do, levels up, etc. I found more funny and enjoyable this one

Originally Natsume whas the Publisher of the Bokujo Monogatari series in the US and brought it out their under the name Harvest Moon for better understanding what the game is about. This went so on for nearly a decade until Marvelous the original developers decided to publish their own games on their own. But as Natsume owns the right for the name Harvest Moon Marvelous released games of the Series as Story of Seasons that is a translation of the original name.
But as they did not do a big campaign most people did not even recocnize it when 2015 came another entry for their beloved series as Story of Seasons for the 3DS.
But as Natsume still owns the Name Harvest Moon and the brand has recognition they started doing their own game and so 2014 came for 3DS The Lost Valley as the first game that whas developed by the publishers instead of the original developers.

Some could think that when Story of Seasons Friends of Mineral Town, that is a remake of the famous Harvest Moon Friends of Mineral Town, came out the confusion should be cleared but there are still people that get confused.

Which is honestly understandable because where Natsumes Harvest Moon looks more like traditional Harvest Moon but has experimental gameplay, has Marvelous more traditional gameplay and recurring characters but different looks.
Though both teams are now trying to interpret and reimageine the original games as the current Marvelous is not like the original team as for example Yasuhiro Wada the original creator left the team after HM Animal Parade.

Stardew Valley that will likely get mentioned too is nothing more then another interpretation of the original games created by a single guy.
Personally I would rather recommend Stardew Valley but if the question is SoS Friends of Mineral Town or SoS Pioneers of Olive Town then I recommend FoMT as it is still containing a spark of the original games.

I was wondering the same thing, but looking at the DLC, there's actually no expansion DLC for Friends of Mineral Town. Do you think there'll be some released in the future? I want to binge the entire game's content at once, so if there's DLC coming then I'll just get Pioneers of Olive Town with its DLC, but if there's no DLC for Mineral Town coming, then I'll buy Mineral Town since the cost of entry should be lower.

Not going to happen. FoMT is a remake of the old GBA Game that whas still released in the West under Harvest Moon.
They actually started doing DLCs with the second last Game SoS Trio of Towns Started doing DLCs except Europe and now with PoOT they made a game with DLCs planed from the Start.

I think SOS: Friends of Mineral Town is more newbie friendly, I recommend that one.

But for "better" content get this one - SOS: Pioneers of Olive Town

yea mineral town is a remake of the old GBA game so its a more classic feel than olive town... in olive town you have makers and a few more quality of life improvements and mineral town is the formula people fell in love with from the beginning
