Particles from flowers

What's going on with flowers when they wiggle in place and produce grey particles from the top? I see this periodically but can't find a reference to it in the books.

I can't say for certain, so please correct me if I'm wrong, but the impression I got was that the "particles" represented the flowers' entering a 'seeding' phase. I think this is a visual cue that the flower is about to 'spread'.
