Regardless of whether this is the case or not, this is another quirk that leads to confusion that really ought to be fixed, even if it isn't a top priority.
I'd toss the Undo button in the instructions to Stack Overflow on this list, too, since the button prompt in the instructions looks like a backspace key and not E.
There are probably more still that I've not noticed.
I just got this last night immediately after completing a level during an extended play through but only after winning 4 rounds that time, during which I was going nuts looking for an actual plane.
The best I can figure is that landing the plane means beating a level--In a sense making the ground level enough to land a plane. So you just need to complete 9 waves at some point.
Why not the word ship or include a tiny animation of the ship landing each time, I have no idea :) Maybe the game was based on a real life game that had a plane rather than a UFO and they forgot to change the wording?

But maybe as someone said they changed track and now it became more like Space Invaders (with a hint of Missile Command as its secondary) only your UFO acts like a Missile Command enemy satellite unit that spawned nukes.
Either way, it's Missile Command and Space Invaders combined, I think.
