Where to look for lumber?

On the chicago map, NE side around Lincoln park and I cannot for the life of me find lumber outside of looting safehouses. Is the region I'm in just a dry spot for it, RNG screwing me, or am I missing something? Thanks

Huh.... that is weird. The region I am in, I have seen at least ten places with it so far... How far into the game are you? How much have you explored? Have you tried increasing respect? Plenty of times, resources (both bought and sold) are locked until you raise respect and/or unlock them. I could just give you my seed if that helps.

I have lumber unlocked. Roughly a year and change into the game and can buy bricks and suchlike, just no lumber sources that I can find and I've explored almost the entire map third I'm in. Seed would be appreciated for my next game, I've had to resort to console commands to get anything built

I'm pretty sure that's just RNG, unfortunately. I had a similar incident but with auto repair. There were literally 0 auto shops of any kind near me. The only thing I found took 36 movement points to get to and it was inside of a hooligan's influence, and I couldn't threaten or afford to fight him. It seems that sometimes you just get dealt a terrible hand.

Now there is a favor that you can sometimes use to ask about available construction goods. But that favor seems to be rare, since more than likely you'll find those resources on your own, and the business owners won't have any contacts to tell you about.

My very first Chicago map only had one food dye seller on the first 1/3 to 1/2 of my map. And it was in a horrible, difficult to reach corner. (The random street generator made like 60 blocks accessible only by one entrance, at the complete opposite end of the food dye seller.) It practically killed my whisker production.

Most maps seem to be fairly evenly spread, but every once in a while you get a real unlucky one.

It seems my only source of lumber is gang wars lol. I'm making inroads with some of the hoodlums and hoping I get offered to buy some lumber off the back of a truck.

There's an overlay that shows you the residential/industrial/commercial zoning of the city. While there is some lumber in commercial areas, it tends to be a lot more common in industrial areas, so head for a concentration of buildings shaded yellow in the overlay.

did you use a favor at a front to search for building materials? they will show you where they are

I've done it several times and finally had it get me to lumber rather than brick. It's in a rival outfit's turf, of course, so the third war for Home Depot is about to begin.

Everything is fairly abundant resourcewise. Area also has plenty of buyers for beer and cider.

That's probably why I am fairly lucky. The area has a solid mix of all three types
