I think you are putting too much realism into the game. It's just a game with a gangster atmosphere. I'm also stuck on that baseball bat mission but I'm assuming that it's something I'm missing rather than blaming it on the game.
For the OP - what information do you want to know? Maybe someone can help
Hmm, I'd still advice doing the tutorial for most folks, it isn't that long before the hand-holding ends. And certainly if there are some good videos out there folks should post links to them.
And honestly, if there is a tutorial, I shouldn't be required to look for additional youtube videos. I don't think I ever encountered a game with a tutorial where that was necessary.
But yes of course, you are right, that can be an option.
If not I guess in time there will be maps which show where to find what resource (unless it is randomized). But maybe there are at least areas where it is more likely to find certain things. For now, as I wrote, I am really upset with the game and can't play any further. So I guess the best thing for me is now to take a break. But again, very kind of you to offer help, I appreciate that, thank you!
But you are right there are always some bad videos. Think this is one of the better ones...

Find build materials using the overlays. From memory (at work and no access to the game) its the far left overlay called Resources (overlays in top left hand corner of screen). Use this to highlight on the map what resources you want to find. You can only see resources that you have scouted/scoped out.
To repair your vehicle you need to find a mechanic and take your car there to repair it. Again, use the overlays (I think the second from the left) and use that to find a mechanic.
Most likely if you cant build the business its because you dont have the skills. Obtaining skills is a big part of the game and from my memory of the tutorial it doesnt really emphasize it alot. Again, you can use the overlays to find business that have skills available to learn (reward from doing a quest for them)
Check out the videos section I have put up two videos - a beginner guide and a guide on fronts. Hopefully they can help you out (not sure of etiquette of linking my own videos)
Ill try to answer since im sitting here listening to a podcast.
Everything is loaded in random which somewhat explains building materials. I did have a couple of runs where I ran into the car fixing problem because even though I expanded I still hadn't found an Auto Shop.
Remember its very important to use your people connections and favors and open up other people on the board. As the game goes on opening new people up with favors will open up some of the building materials you are having a hard time finding.
Also make sure to place cash in your base to upgrade and build. I fell for that the first time playing.
ALSO: The overlay which the poster above mentions. This is probably the biggest thing since you will use it all game. Soon as the game starts you should be looking in the overlay to find out what is around you.
Just remember to breathe when playing. I mean if this was a souls game I would understand. This game just uses a different game muscle. Good luck
I know about the resource overlay. As much as I critized the turoial for a lack of information, that was not it. The tutorial explains the overlays. But when the overlay doesn't show anything, you can't do much.
The skilll learning usually also needs materials and that was another problem. But it's true, the tutorial doesn't emphasize that at all. If skill learning is necessary to find new materials, then I was certainly not aware of that.
I tried my best to gain as much trust as possible with new people and using favors, but it just didn't work out for me I guess. From what you write it seems I was in a very bad part of the map, lacking almost everything relevant to proceed with the game.
I would have loved to upgrade but never met the requirements. But I was aware of the option.
I breathe, don't worry. I actually love games that are turn based because I have time to think. Here it was just frustrating because I felt I couldn't do or build anything. I never made much money with my little operation and I felt like I was falling more and more behind (which I probably was). I am actually a very patient guy but after hours of not finding anything to make real progress there is just a point where you give up. At least that was what I felt.
Thank you again for yor replies. I guess that was just very bad rng for me and it is usually easier to find building materials and such.
The more businesses you discover the more potential items you can find to buy/sell
Like, you get a randomized business to own based on the seed...
I mean there is such thing as ♥♥♥♥♥♥ spawns in this game.
