City of Gangsters is a whole different ball game (and I for one am extremely grateful for that). If you take out the bats, the guns, the greedy cops - and the fact that the products you're dealing in are currently illegal - then it would still make a fine business and logistics simulation. It's all about supply and demand, getting your product to where it's needed, keeping your customers happy, winning new customers by word of mouth, and improving your productivity, efficiency and supply lines. The fact that it's all done with a menacing smile and an iron fist in a velvet glove is pretty much beside the point - it's a business simulation first and foremost. You just happen to be dealing in illegal goods and competing against very aggressive rivals, with all that that entails: gang conflict, not detailed gang combat.
The level and detail of violence in CoG seems to suit this game perfectly, in my view.
The advantages of Gangsters organised crimes (Gangsters 2 was trash) were clearly the following points:
- Turn based / real time mix. And this is probably the only and most important point, which is why Gangster's organized crime could remain number 1. Because it was absolute fun to give the orders at the beginning of the week and then watch how they are executed during the real time week (with a lot of life in the city). So it could happen that an order was not executed because your gangster was killed before. You can still be such a good boss... Your plans can be thrown completely overboard. In addition, you could intervene during the week. unique!!!
- Atmosphere: because the music, Backgrounds, Videos and the life in the City.
- shootings
- politicians and judges were also involved
and now what's better with CoG:
- huge map / 3d map with all perspectives
- Beautiful cities
- type of territory growth (respect)
- Networking
- focus on alcohol sales (because that's how they got really rich back then, because casinos and brothels had the mafia before)
- different cities
- ethnicity
- More Gangs
I hope they make a City of Gangsters 2 with turn based and real time mix with life in the city.... that would be the best prohibition game ever!!!!
City of Gangsters is a economy trading game in a gangster suit
and
Empire of Sin is a turn based squad shoot em up in a gangster suit
I'm not saying either of them are bad games, just not the game the OP and many others are looking for.
After playing the demo I do think this is as close as any game has come to it, fans of gangsters will enjoy this i think
I have to agree with Sunderland on this. Sure, there are some things Gangsters 1 & 2 had which CoG apparently will not, but that surely applies to any game of any genre unless it's a straight rip-off - which CoG most definitely is not.
More to the point though, there are certain things that CoG clearly does a whole lot better than either version of Gangsters ever did (understandable, since even Gangster 2 is now two decades old), which surely should be the main consideration here?
I fully expect CoG to be just as immersive as Gangsters but far more demanding and challenging over a full game, and with potentially much greater replay value. Nostalgia is all well and good, but that's precisely what I want from a game these days.
Ive always been absolutely amazed that it was never remade. still not forgiven them for gangsters 2, took a great in depth game with bags of potential that literally just needed a few things updated and instead they gutted it and made a crap (in my view) story and mission based game.
I know its not their intention but im looking at COG as the real gangsters 2
