Evelyn wants a bunch of ways to deal fire damage to deal with the tree and will be one of your main damage dealers in this fight. Reginald, depending on how you build him, can also deal a decent amount of damage with Holy attacks. Andrin and Magnus have some different uses.
Andrin, if you reached level 2, can be a good support with wild hunt and can usually be the one to help kill the healer and support damage. Magnus usually wants to be tanking and mass applying block, as he is your warrior. Magnus can't really do much against the trees given his bleed damage cards but he should have a decent amount of ways to block.
Make sure to put all your points into perks and level cards up as well instead of always adding new ones to your deck. Once you get a few dmg and status perks all the fights will start to feel easier.
Magnus' barricade spell is one of the handiest and most reliable ways to shield your team, buying a second copy and upgrading it help a lot.

* There's a character that can be unlocked in Act 1 without needing to kill the tree boss. He's the pig guy down at the bottom of the screen. Take his quest, head up and kill Yogger, and he's yours in future runs. He focuses on shielding allies, which can dramatically reduce the pain.
* This boss likes using Wet to apply to himself, which removes Burn stacks. So while you'd figure Fire is a great damage type to use on him, turns out not so much. Or at least don't focus heavily on applying Burns, merely damage.
* Focus on the dryad, it's also a healer. Then focus on the tree.
* Don't try for the ambush, odds are you won't make it and you'll just make things worse for yourself.
I struggled quite a lot my first time through. I did significantly better, beating the first boss on my first run after resetting my progress.
Just want to come in and correct this. He doesn't apply wet he just dispels the first 2 debuffs applied to him every 3 turns or so.
As for my biggest advice after having done many 0 progression runs is you'll want to choose your turns to attack wisely. On the turns where Ylmer has thorns and his +30% resistance buffs you will want to pass on your damage for that turn and save energy for turns he isn't going super defensive otherwise you are going to lose a lot of damage hitting into +30% physical resists and taking a lot by hitting the thorns.
As for bosses, I personally found more luck trying to snipe bosses before killing their minions, but both ways can work.
