The launcher is entirely skippable, you can disable it by going to:

Steam > Library > Across the Obelisk > Properties > General > Launch Options > Select Skip Launcher

The devs and team recognize that it isn't necessary so they now let you easily skip it
Depends on context. If for multiplayer or collecting/using card backs from events, I believe it is needed.

wait i need it to play wtih friends all on pc ?

I might be wrong on this, but you should not need the launcher for multiplayer or card backs.

A Paradox account can be used to unlock a single card back, but that account is entirely separate from the launcher I believe.

I play multiplayer all the time without using the launcher, and have never had issues with card backs not saving when not using the launcher.

no, you gucci. I haven't seen the launcher since the first day it was implemented, used some CMD settings to bypass it (and could still play online a year, hadn't played the game since June 2024). Recently Steam implemented a skip launcher option when you are attempting to launch the game, and you can use the skip launcher option as default with a checkmark, and you'll not be asked again (probably until another patch, and you'll have to check that option again)

Thanks for the clarification, folks.
I think you need launcher for crossplay, but that is all it is needed for.

You still have to accept Paradox's EULA and hand over all your data (game time, devices, name, address, IP, payment information, who you play with, etc.). Pretty much everything they can get their hands on.
Such a good game, but still unplayable...

man everything has my data im a cuck for this world idc at this point i just dont want a 2nd launcher anymore after EA cucking me on deadpsace 3 unable to connect to tis services cuz of my region and cant play it online anymore even tho we were close to beating it
You never needed the launcher for this. Launch the game through steam library and click the skip launcher option. You can even use add/remove programs to uninstall the launcher entirely and as long as you always launch the game through your library with the launcher disabled, it will never reinstall.

It's like everyone giving an answer hasn't played for over a year. No launcher is required to play the game. No launcher is required to do multiplayer. No launcher is required to receive any card backs except the free one for creating an account with them and still no launcher needed after receiving it...
