Starter Set seems like a really good deal?
I have never played this game...should I just grab the starter or do base game first? I am not sure how important those DLCs are but the price is good and in this economy I love me a sale.

If I were to reset my account with all the knowledge I've gained with all the DLCs of this game, I would say: Yes, it's worth it. You get the base game, which can be a lot of fun, especially with friends, so in my opinion it's already worth the $20. Then you get Sands of Ulminin, which has two new nice heroes and a nice desert map (I like this scenario and it gives you another choice besides the other 3 biomes) and the queen herself, who is a very capable heroine in my opinion. 20 euros for the starter set is a good deal compared to my experience with other games and their DLC guidelines, which I have accumulated over the last 230 games I have purchased.

I think it is a good deal. If you like deckbuilders and roguelites, you definitely should try AtO. Normally I would recommend buying base game and see if you like it, but sale is a sale, seems good. I would consider buying Wolf Wars, with 50% discount they this DLC is as expensive as Amelia the Queen and I would say, it is WW are worth a bit more. I had a blast with this game, despite Paradox being invlolced. If you hate Paradox, do not buy, if you do not care about Paradox, you may have a blast.

I would get the DLC now while its on sale. I bought the game by itself originally got about 100 hours in the game then got the DLC. You could do the same and see if you like it but half price for everything basically is really good right now

Before all the Paradox/launcher drama, consesus was that DLC are on the expensive end but the base game was dirt cheap anyway. So if you have experience with similar games and you like them, go for it. But be ready, runs in AtO can get long, if you are playing on higher difficulties or if you are not yet familiar with the game.

A small adendum to your post, you can save and quit at any point and resume later. Even in the middle of a battle it will save exactly where you were at any point during a run so it might take 3 hours to do a full campaign but you can split it up into 10 minutes segments if you wanted to

So i just started and grabbed the starter set and got 27 hours in already.

Also remember there are other places to buy the keys for the dlc that comes outs later after the starter bundle just sayin

This save-quitting feature can also be used to change certain nodes, if you don't initiate the node, but accidentally click on the wrong one or wrong action, you can ALT F4 and essentially reload the last fully done node you completed. This is useful for certain stuff like accidentally not picking up wolfy because they changed accept from top to bottom or vice versa as an example.

Most of the DLC's are usually on bought by people for the characters, unless you're the one hosting, then sands is useful for everyone who plays with you, (this is coming from me who's hosted a lot of games with said DLC). These characters are borderline pay to win due to how powercreep works, Yogger was busted on release and got nerfed, so are Laia and Navalea.

Queen is pretty bad in my opinion due to most characters being more effective than her in general play, and her requiring specific rift items to be good, so if you're with XYZ character and they want XYZ item, it's bad to have her as well since you have to go to a rift in advance, which could change the entire node route you use. With certain team compositions she's good as her rift items and rifts can be used to gather items for Nezglekt or Gustav (im saying these as mind stacks on them are useful).

TLDR;

You're buying wolf wars for 1 Character, and some Skins

Sands is for 2 characters, 2 pets, and a Act area with bunch of items in.

Queen is for 1 Character, some nodes that can be used to traverse the map (they're randomly chance to spawn) and some new items.

From what i can see the new character DLC is similar to queen, with it having 1 character and a pet with some nodes. And the Area DLC is like wolf wars, which has some skins in, minus the Yogger part.

So it essentially is like wolf wars, split into two separate DLC'S for i think the same price or higher.
