Focus on learning other aspects of the game before trying to unlock him. Trust me, you'll be better prepared for what the difficulty has in store for you later.
While it is unfair that older players may have had it easier to unlock Heiner, there are heroes that are still harder to unlock and judging from Steam achievments, they are not uncommon to unlock. I recomment patience rather than rushing through the game, if you build up your Perks you will unlock Heiner and much more.
The game is beatable on Madness 0 with no perks and the starting characters. It's not easy but it's definitely doable.
Progression stops pretty early in this. You're doomed if you rely entirely on that. But you wouldn't know that, you threw in the towel after just 12 hours.
Am I missing something about the others that make them tanky?
Magnus can tank just as well as Heiner, maybe better because he will actually go before enemies so he does not require Fortify so often. Bree on the other hand can use skills to similar effect, she can tank with casting Vitality on the team (and block).
Magnus - Tanky boi gets tanky cards aim for barricades if possible, avoid having many attacks in your deck as you can rely on your 2 dps to handle that part of it
Andrin - max slice in deck with upgrade for mark, focus on stacking mark and then eliminating whatever enemy has the mark so you can quickly lower numbers
Reginald - get some "Flash" and upgrade them to cost 0, get a couple holy storm upgraded to give you bless, have 1 YY bolt, a couple golden healing rain so you can shrink your deck, a holy smite or 2 and upgrade them to cost 3 later in the run
Ottis - just put shields on your team and it'll also heal, get some healing rain upgraded to yellow and some dispels. Prayer of Protection is your friend.
There you go. Easy win against the boss. Ottis you likely already have, if not he is literally the best character so you have no reason to complain about not having Heiner if you didn't go get Ottis first.
I'm sure lots of builds can work, but for beating the dwarf on madness 0 I recommend a poison build, both because poison damage ingores shields and because 3/4 classes have cards that scale their damage based on how poisoned the enemy is.
Perhaps you just need to watch some guide? I can recommend DeckerTech, he makes amazing guide on Youtube. I am not skilled in this kind of games, but thanks to him I can (on Madness2) kill Twins in 1st round or kill Lord Hanshek before he kills my pets (sometimes).
Just please do not spread false information, while grind (permanent bonuses) is usefull in this game (actually VERY usefull) but it is mainly about building your team, decks and items during a run.
