Pick your Perks to buff those 2-3 things you want to focus the character on as soon as you got enough points in total, try to grab those choose-one-for-three-points perks that globally enhance the effects your team will deal (for example: Vulnerable stacking to 12 and decaying slower) with one character each.
Obviously you also need some kind of defense generation, some way of keeping your HP up and some dispelling, but those are pretty much the same requirements no matter what you chose to focus on. Remember that you are not forced into the starter team composition - you could play with 4 wages if you want. There are a lot of interesting and powerful combinations that utilize two of the same class.
