Thank you for answering my question. I noticed that I have an easier time with sanity when I choose skills that are meant for helping me with sanity. For example, I have this skill called refocus that helps me gain more sanity, but it takes time for me to use it. I have never had that skill before until I started to invest in sanity skills early on. I think it was the choices that I was making when it came to choosing skills.
1) You don't need to go everywhere. Try to pick and choose more carefully what events you want to go to, as the biggest sanity loss is from time travelling on the mountain. Level ups do not happen quickly after the first mountain, and therefore events are not as important. Big detours are probably not worth the sanity loss.
Events: The sun events (lookouts) and relic events (the other glowing ones) Both have sanity. Lookouts give around 20 each time, but can be tricky to get to. Relics offer a choice between 2 non-oxygen stats, and the ones that offer sanity usually give around 10.
The social/loot encounters can hit your sanity pretty hard if you let them. Try to be helpful to others when you can and not steal their stuff if your sanity is in trouble.
In caves, always explore lights as this is basically guaranteed to give some sanity.
Skills: The event skill tree is a pretty good choice for sanity options. Firstly it reduces sanity 'damage' from events by 2, and 4 if you upgrade it again. This completely negates the sanity loss in some events (like the stick your hand in the spider nest one), which really adds up over a run.
It also includes the incredibly powerful meditation ability, which can give sanity as well.
The light terrain speciality has a skill that increases sanity gain from events, which works on the aforementioned lookouts and relics.
The consumable skill tree gives you an extra 3/5 sanity for each consumable you use, which can help over the course of a run.
And always look out for refocus, which is a neutral ability that just gives you 10 sanity in exchange for time.
