On Topic: I find that the xbox controller's d-pad feels a bit mushy. If it's the only input you have, just play with it. Don't get gear-gated and just enjoy the game!
I also did a research in the topic about the Xbox Series Dpad and a lot of people think is a fantastic Dpad some people say is one of the best Dpads available and some people say is trash. I think the positive opinions come from recent users of the pad and the bad ones are legacy opinions of the xbox dpads that I agree with, i also have an xbox one dpad and that one sucks ass compared to the series X.
So just play and dont worry about it.
yep, just play with what makes you feel comfy. i'd say try both dualsense(ps5 controller), series X controller or even keyboard. keyboard is completely valid!
one of my friends started playing with a keyboard, then moved to a hitbox (which is just a fancy leverless keyboard that works on consoles).
if you REALLY want the best d-pad's i recommend the dualsense controller(ps5 controller) imo its the best D-pad out there.
some would argue that the dualshock 4 (ps4 controller) d-pad's better, but in my HONEST opinion that controller comes with a myriad of problems (constant disconnects due to wobbles, micro-usb cable, too small, hard on your thumb d-pad).
Definitely not worth buying a new/separate controller over, especially considering the issues the ps4 controllers have. Main one being that out of 4 controllers, and 5+ years of various/any usb cables I could find/had lying around, they always had to be duct-taped together, else the controller would dc every couple of minutes while playing, even staying as still as possible. The controller is also noticeably smaller, even as someone with hands on the smaller end of average (medium gloves, etc), and has WAY less compatibility with PC, there's a lot of hoops you have to jump through to make it function as well, and as "easily" as an xbox controller.
TL:DR any modern controller can work good, and do what you need for fighting games. just use the xbox if you have one.
Before it, I used the One controller and it was nice, but the D-Pad was terrible and the device felt a little dated already, even in its time.
And I also used the DualShock 4, which works GREAT with Steam and is one of the most comfortable and responsive controllers out there, IMO... but my right analogue stick got bad after less then a year using it and it was expensive to get fixed. Eventually, I sold it.
If your goal is to go pro, you can use the keyboard with a hitbox layout, as one user says above, while you save for a real one or an arcade stick.
