If your assigned floor is low enough that it doesn't have any players to fight, don't be afraid to go up until you find a more populated floor. 5 and 6 should have people, there are probably some players in 4 as well. Just because the game is telling you that you belong on floor 2 doesn't mean you can't wipe the floor with some floor 5 player, but it does mean you probably won't be beating the floor 10 players in the park for a little while.
Definitely play at your own speed. Don't let yourself be shamed for playing single player, either. As long as you're getting better today than you were yesterday, you're doing it right.
As a newer player to Guilty Gear I agree with the ranked and single-player take. I've played a few other fighting games and typically stuck with Casual, but that's actually potentially harmful here.
My experience in casual/park: stomped constantly by 1000+ lvl players (or smurfs playing at that skill level) and had zero fun.
My experience in ranked: got stomped a bit at first, got my floor reassigned, then started doing OK and actually having fun (my W:L ratio isn't worth bragging over, but I don't go 0:10 anymore). Single player is also a fun distraction if you're feeling a bit salty and want a break while practicing some combos/fundamentals, while not dealing with some obnoxious cheese or lag online. Ranked is better, but not perfect--the block button is God's way of saying it's OK to have fun.
I don't play Testament, but I do know that -->Punch is great for shutting down brainless jump ins in lower ranks (I'm infinitely guilty of this against Test and I reckon others are too) and is the thing that catches me the most...that and the 3/4 screen overhead Test can do...I know it's coming, but I still fall for it. Curse you, pretty/handsome person!
