What's your preferred approach to learning the game?
So I’m also new. The last batch of fighting games that I‘m familiar with harkens back to the SNES-age with SF2, Clayfighter, first Mortal Kombat, first Killer Instinct and so on.

So, what advice would you have for me? Play all the characters and choose your main and go 100% on that one or would you advise me to give equal attention to all characters to get a more holistic view of the game? I don’t want to fight people online just yet because I don’t want to get discouraged.

So any advice is welcome :)

The best teacher is the game's tutorial itself, it teaches you all the mechanisms about the game.

The second best teacher is the dustloop wiki[www.dustloop.com]. It gives you all the information/data you need to become competent, but you will need to learn the basics first.

And watching videos of course.

As for the main character, I'd suggest you to pick 2 or 3 characters as your main characters. My experience tells me that one main character is not enough, especially when you want to revenge but your main character is countered by your opponent's character. It's very likely that you will want to switch character in situations like Leo vs Millia or Chaos vs Nago. Mastering all these characters is mentally stressing and not recommended.

And have a look on the other characters that you don't play as main, you'll need to know how those characters work at least, understanding the basics of those characters will help you fighting them.

Do the tutorials, then play all the characters and choose your main and go 100% on that one

If you don't already know who you want to play, play everyone a bit and see who you like. Once you've pinned down your favorite, focus entirely on them while you learn the game.

You'll learn what other characters do by playing against them and labbing stuff against them.

Thank you for your responses! I picket Giavanna as my main for the time being since she's a beginner-friendly character. But in my experince, the character that I initially start playing as almost never end up being my main in the end.

Step 1, pick Faust

Step 2, spam items

Step 3, if you lose its bad RNG, if you win you're a god

Thing is, if you don't go by character "soul and aesthetics connection", but by choosing one that you feel that has more fun playstyle, then beware that initial take on how character plays when you just started may and probably will drastically change as soon as you reach advanced level of competence with it. And you may not like what you see anymore

I go into training and press buttons on random characters until I find ones I like then try bnb combos and stuff

Interesting take. I'll remeber that.

At that point, you might as well change your auto-messages to "haha, u lose to low-tier" and "whaddaya expect, I'm low-tier."

I wouldn't worry too much about it. By the time you reach the point where you're starting to realize that your character isn't fun at a high level, they've more than done their job as your first character to learn the game with.

my process of learning a new fighting game:

-do the tutorial to become familiar with the game's systems
-pick a character I think looks cool
-learn a few bnbs off of prominent buttons/from different situations (eg counter hit state)
-watch high level players that play that character and see what they do/check dustloop for science (hitboxes/frame data, etc)
-lab out match ups

in between all that, just play other ppl. playing other ppl is the most important since neutral is still a thing, plus player tendencies. strive's replay system is really good, so even if you get destroyed by ppl better than you, you can easily check the replay and then lab out the situations that ♥♥♥♥♥♥ you.

and most of all, enjoy the process of getting better and learning

I smash my had against a brick wall until I learn so I don't recommend that.

Unlike smash and MVS 2d fighters tend to have more complex characters so the decision to learn more than one is up to you. I will say that typically unless you're a pro you won't have time to get good at more than one character. HOWEVER learning other characters does help you lab against them if you aren't willing to play long sets against people to learn.
YOU should play whoever you think looks cool.
Learn your buttons and a simple bnb combo to get started.
Add other mechanics to your arsenal as you get better.
You will lose a lot but those losses will help you grow.
Never play against CPUS in fighting games, they cheat and teach you bad habits.

Play some matches, watch my replays, take notes, training mode to fix the issues I saw. Repeat forever

Win a few, lose a few, close game
