GUILTY GEAR -STRIVE-

Steamdeck Experience
Stutter at points and noticeable input latency. 60fps most of the time but dips with certain effects.

There's some useful info on the protondb page:

https://www.protondb.com/app/1384160

I don't have a deck, but I do try Steam games on Linux. I had similar results.

I play exclusively on Linux, on a Ryzen 7 with integrated graphics, using the game's medium preset, and I get stable 60fps everywhere but the dammed hunting grounds stage, that one is straight up bugged in the PC port and completely tanks the performance.

Or maybe the stage causes lag because there's more that has to be done in order to render that stage. Just because it's in the background doesn't mean it's insignificant to render it.

And technically, using integrated graphics means that you're not fitting the minimum system requirements, so it wouldn't be strange for the game to not always run at full speed.

1. I haven't heard of any problem on PS4, if the stage was actually supposed to be so resource heavy to bring my PC down to 30fps when every other stage is a perfect 60fps, surely the PS4 would be struggling too.

2. It's an AMD integrated graphics card, which is actually decent and far above the recommended card (it's a Vega 8 GPU).

3. I actually looked it up and there are threads about that stage being a ♥♥♥♥♥ both here and on Reddit, and there is even a Dustloop article about that and other commonly but less offending stages (that thankfully aren't a problem for me), which also links to mods to make those stages much lighter.

I'd imagine that if it's a slight problem for PS4, it'd be hard to tell, since there's no FPS counter (and if it was more than slight, something would have been done about it). But I did refrain on commenting on PS4 because I don't have one, don't have any experience with how it performs, and the stage that was patched due to bad performance on PS4 was a different (also known laggy) stage.

This site I've found suggests that the AMD Radeon RX Vega 8 is overall somewhat worse (as a GPU) than the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 Ti (what's listed in the minimum requirements): https://versus.com/en/amd-radeon-rx-vega-8-vs-nvidia-geforce-gtx-650-ti

It's a known fact that the stage is more likely to cause lag, but it's also a known thing that sometimes people try to play fighting games while barely (or not even) fulfilling the system requirements.
I don't know if the stage lags if you're just at the system requirements (assuming you're playing at something like 720p, since you shouldn't use a high resolution unless you're comfortably at or above the recommended), but the stage performing worse (relative to other stages) doesn't make it bugged, especially when there's obvious reason for it to perform worse.

Hey yawl i just wanted to add to this discussion.

The deck is a computer but also isnt.

While theres a lot of nice folks in this chat proving it runs well on their linux beast machines. I think the issue with the deck is its wizardy.

The game needs optimization for it.

For example valve worked with the devs at project red to get it ready for deck and the guys who made elden ring as well as kojima. All their games got optimized fir the proton port.

Guilty gear… however sadly, isn’t optimized and is being force run with the proton overlay.

One would hope that its new found popularity from the british brisket addition, that they will make updates in the next patch dlc.

Its one of the few games on my deck i cant even hook up to my tv without it completely breaking.

Sadly for us deck owners theres only so many things that can be done.

Its up to the devs at arc to fix it.

I put this on the Devs on inconsistent performance, the game doesn't utilise resources properly.
The game on random days decides that it's less important than some random application I have in the background and doesn't take it's resources. I have to force affinity to Very High to get it to stop micro-stuttering, or close specific programs that are fighting it for resources when I never have said issue with any other game. I have to always close Spotify when I play GGST, because GGST's .exe is mentally challenged. As well as 1440p, 4K. Those resolutions are extremely unstable, so if some basic things cause the game to freak out, I don't have high hopes for the Steam Deck to be used properly.

Agreed. It seems to be completely designed for ps5 playing with superfast internet connections like fiber.

I dont want to use the term elitism, i just dont have another word to use in its place, so lets use that in place of the feeling.

It feels like the developers made a “premium or luxury” game made for a specific set of players with the money to get the ps5.

I mean i guess we can’t complain that it even works on steam deck but its just not the same.

Of course steam’s proton will probably be updated with this type of compatibility issue in mind for games like it.
