in general, Axl will blow up once you get into close range. Leo and Gio can both cover ground very quickly, but they're a bit slower in the air so you're likely going to want to trick them into thinking you're going for an air approach. Sol Poente -might- be a good dash-in move too because of how it extends its range and should avoid 2P and 2H.
Sometimes I like to check Axls with a ground dash, neutral jump, backwards airdash to see how they react (also because I find it funny.) If you can condition them into thinking your airdash is gonna be a fakeout, then just glide right in and get that J. button of your choice.
That said, this "for laughs" tech isn't gonna work in the long term. Gotta hit the lab eventually.
Dash, block, pushback, dash, block, pushback, dash, block, pushback
he does have the range and almost one move for each situation but they are all slow, most have long recovery time. some are slow to come out as well.
the basic idea is to always be chasing him, forcing him to do something and let him make the first move, then react to it.
try to stay in the ground unless you sure of what you doing. because if he attack you there, you just block and is not big deal as you will regain the space with your dash during his move recovery, do that enough times against any character and they can't keep you away.
patience and not making mistakes is the key with fighting zoners.
if you can make him whiff the move, that's great, you now got a big chunk of space, but don't try too be too eager because he has many ways to deal with that and that's where he wins his games.
but of course is not that simple, else he would be a garbage character that no one plays.
he has a ranged grab, a full screen projectile with multiple followups so you can't just keep doing the wait and see game, moves that cover multiple options, long range moves that have to be blocked low and long ranged air attacks and a overhead that have to be blocked high as well.
and he will use that stuff to open you up even if you taking your time and blocking. so you gotta be ready for that.
the idea for any matchup really is get used to their move set, so you know how to defend and when you can try something else. many things you can also depends on your character
so check https://www.dustloop.com/wiki/index.php?title=GGST/Axl_Low
specially the frame data
and try stuff in training mode too, stuff like "if i block this move, do i have time to reach him before he does something else?"
