asteroid reaserch ist a specific research that you can pile up for later
There are 4 types of research: Asteroid, Planetary, Stellar, and Black Hole. Each can be gained through their own means, or by killing enemies.
New Research just means you've collected research of any kind.
All research points you gain are tracked forever in their respective bucket. So if I kill an enemy and it drops 2 Asteroid research points, 2 points are contributed to whatever research is currently active as "New Research", and 2 points of lifetime Asteroid research points are added to your total Asteroid Research bucket.
Some technologies require a minimum amount of lifetime research for a specific type. So if something say it needs 100 Asteroid Research that means you need to have collected at least 100 asteroid research total through the lifetime of your game.
