Can't seem to find the portal

It's the same place you came in on. There's a path from the centre of town to the portal, which is a lighter colour earth than the rest of the land. The portal itself looks like a tower of rocks, about as high as the player character. It becomes a portal only when you get near it. It is in the middle of a clearing with trade carts around it.

Wow, that was not helpful at all. Anybody who can remember where they came from wouldn't need help. The "path" is a web of paths that go all over. The tower of rocks is not visible from the center of town, because things are blocking the view. And the trade carts don't exist during your first visit.
