I very much enjoyed Save the Light, so I was looking forward to this game coming out outside of the apple arcade. So far, I haven't completed the game, but my first impression is that there are good and bad changes. It's sort of a mix of Attack the Light and Save the light, and I can definitely tell that this was originally made for mobile devices. Currently, there isn't much use for playing with a controller, it can move you around the over world and get you through dialogue, but it cannot do anything in combat as far as I've figured. There is also no settings menu.

Anyways, game play wise, I've always really liked this battle system, which others have described as inspired by the paper Mario series. It has a new mechanic where you can switch where people are on the battle field, which will increase or decrease the threat level of team mates, I like how there are enemies that coincide with this feature, projecting who they are going to attack and giving you an opportunity to strategize accordingly.

Moving around in the game is more of a swipe based procedure then free movement like Save the Light, so be prepared to do a lot more clicking and dragging. I would have preferred the old method but since this is a port there isn't much to be done.

The story is about on par with the last games so far, not mind blowing or anything, but it's still good enough to keep me going. Mostly the combat is what the game is about. There are more puzzles this time. They are my kind of puzzles because they are just complex enough to make me think a little but not hard enough that I have to look up a walk through. I have a dumb poo poo brain when it comes to that kind of stuff so it's nice for me and other people who might not be puzzle minded people.

I guess it's not necessarily required to know the story of the other games to get what's going on but I'd highly recommend it because why would you play the third game in a trilogy that is story based. You definitely need to have watched through the whole run of Steven Universe, as this takes place right after Steven Universe, but before Future.

If you liked the previous games, this one will probably be good as well, if not a little jarring in the switch of how it controls.

Steven Universe: Unleash the Light is an RPG and turn-based strategy game.

Disclaimer: I did not play any of the other games of the series nor watched the animated series.

Steven and his friends are on their way to find some villain whose name I don't know anymore since it's something with numbers in it. I never watched the series so forgive me if I didn't get it right. Besides the name of the villain, it's a fun little story even for people who did not watch the series at all. Surprisingly, I found it to be somewhat enjoyable and even funny.

Dialogues are fully voiced which adds a lot to the overall atmosphere especially since the voice actors are great. Sometimes you can decide between different answeres. Based on that, one of your characters gets bonus EXP.

is to find colorful keys to open new doors in the palace. You will find these keys on other planets. Unlike these planets, the palace will change every time you visit it (Enemies get stronger as you get stronger, etc).

Every planet has several levels. Levels are like a dungeon in a dungeon crawler without being procedurally generated. You can find items, chests, enemies, healing well, some kind of shop and other objects in there. To get some of the keys, you need to do little riddles.

Are turn-based. Each attack costs action points. You get 5 per turn for the whole team (without items). Every point you don't use will carry over to the next turn. You also have a gauge for special attacks. It fills up by doing damage and killing enemies.
Another mechanic worth being mentioned is formation. Once per turn, you can swap two of your characters on the battlefield to hide from an enemy for example. Some attacks go in a straight line, so if your character is on the very top but the enemy is underneath the top line, you can't attack him.
Do you remember the South Park game, where you have to click at the right moment when attacking to do more damage? Quick-time events like these are important to do more damage or defend yourself (especially the latter!).

There is just one difficulty option. It's not really hard outside of boss fights but one of your characters can easily die If you're not using items every other turn or between fights. Since they will be resurrected with a few HP after every battle, it doesn't really matter. That's another thing: Items aren't really rare. You will get plenty of them which means: Don't sit on them like in other RPGs.

There are eight characters in total and your party can consist of four. After every level up your character gains a skill point which you can use in their skill tree to make them stronger. There's also a chance to get a new ability to use in a fight. You can equip different costumes which you have to craft first, collect and equip one badge per character to get bonuses as well as up to three spells per character. Spells give bonuses like +3HP, +6DEF, etc.

• It's very atmospheric thanks to great voice actors, nice-looking visuals, and a suitable soundtrack.
  
• Turn-based battles are somewhat different from your 0815 TBS game thanks to a few uncommon (but certainly not new) mechanics. It also can get annoying thanks to that, but more about it in the "Bad" part.
  
• It's very diversified. Turn-based battles, riddles, getting new loot, leveling up, exploring "dungeons" and following the story.
  
• The progression is consistent. You will unlock and discover new things all the time, unlocking new characters a few hours in, getting new attacks to use, etc.
  
• The palace offers a challenge for experienced players.

• Even when you click on "Skip" it doesn't skip dialogues or animations completely. It's just as fast as when you click on the dialogue itself and animations are still playing to some extend.
  
• There is no way to change battle speed. I guess that's thanks to the quick-time events but animations are pretty slow.
  
• Special attacks are very long and there is no way to skip the animation even though there is no quick-time event involved. It's annoying after the first few times using it.
  
• The same goes for quick-time events in general. This depends on the players liking 100% but there may be some who don't like to click on the screen all the time.
  
• There is some depth missing in total especially for the asking price (without a sale). Don't get me wrong, there is a lot of content and it's fun but it feels a bit bland overall. There is something of everything but nothing really in-depth (I'm saying this as a TBS-Fan!).
  
• Different difficulty settings are missing. Normal levels are just too easy (with a few exceptions here and there).

Steven Universe: Unleash the Light offers a diversified and fun experience. While normal levels could be harder, the palace and boss fights are challenging enough. RPG elements could be a bit more sophisticated though but as this is a game based on a license it's really impressive how good it is. This seems to be a must-have for fans of the series.

I've never really watched the show aside from an episode or two, but that didn't deter me from wanting this game. It's bright and colorful and has super smooth gameplay. I didn't see any lag between quick map movements, and you get to fight a wide variety of characters as you upgrade your team with fun loot. Recommend! Charming game!
