Permissions, UAC, stuff...
What the hell do you think you're doing to my computer? Why does a game need suspicious permissions in order to run? :s

Thanks, and wow that's so creepy.
Reminds me of some other game that would just drop random files on the Desktop folder... some devs are sick
Um, you know that this is a virtual detective 'game', right? You've been given an image copy of the USB drive for forensic investigation.

Fear not, it is just a VHD disk image[en.wikipedia.org] (like a daemon tools iso) and contains no bootable script/executable.

Here is the file list, which you can access at \steamapps\common\TUSFitG\TUSFitG.VHD if you do not trust the virtual disk or trust TUSFitG.exe to run it:
F:\!Other F:\books F:\movies F:\HuginSetup_2012.0.0_64bit_Windows.exe F:\QuickTimeInstaller.exe F:\PDF - faktury i wyciagi F:\Perfect_Effects_8.1.0_PE.exe F:\calibre-64bit-1.48.0.msi F:\scribus-1.4.4-windows-x64.exe F:\Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.1_Win_x86_install_pl.exe F:\iview438_setup.exe F:\calibre-64bit-3.13.0.msi F:\calibre-64bit-3.21.0.msi F:\Dear_diary F:\System Volume Information\IndexerVolumeGuid F:\System Volume Information\WPSettings.dat F:\books\lord-jim.mobi F:\books\pieklo-kobiet.mobi F:\books\proces.epub F:\books\wizard_of_Oz.epub F:\movies\[kickass.to]blue.is.the.warmest.color.2013.bdrip.x264.psychd.torrent F:\movies\[torrent.pl] Blue Is The Warmest Color 2013 720p BluRay DTS x264-PublicHD.torrent F:\movies\Under the Skin (2013) [1080p] F:\movies\Under the Skin (2013) [1080p]/WWW.YIFY-TORRENTS.COM.jpg F:\Dear_diary\dear diary 2018 05.odt F:\Dear_diary\PIC F:\Dear_diary\file1.zip F:\Dear_diary\file2.zip F:\Dear_diary\file3.zip F:\Dear_diary\PIC\IMG_9116.CR2 F:\Dear_diary\PIC\20180507_134328.jpg F:\Dear_diary\PIC\Hanoi_1959.tif F:\Dear_diary\PIC\20180510_180659.jpg F:\Dear_diary\PIC\20180511_133731.jpg F:\Dear_diary\PIC\20180513_144037.jpg F:\Dear_diary\PIC\IMG_9177.CR2 F:\Dear_diary\PIC\IMG_9183.CR2 F:\Dear_diary\PIC\IMG_9185.CR2 F:\Dear_diary\PIC\IMG_1820.JPG F:\Dear_diary\PIC\IMG_9218.CR2 F:\Dear_diary\PIC\IMG_9259.CR2 F:\Dear_diary\PIC\IMG_9268.CR2

You can just open TUSFitG.VHD with any competent archive program (recommend 7-zip)

I was going to upload the contents to cloud so that the paranoid don't have to worry but of course as expected there is a very special reason the entire drive has been included. You will need the whole drive to dive deeply into the mystery.

I would not trust any of the executables and they should not be necessary unless you start opening the installer cabs/containers and getting into hex editing, etc to see what's inside. I doubt that the devs expect us to go there.

Yes but normal games simulate whatever they need, they don't do it for real.
For instance, I don't recall using a real gun when playing Far Cry. Yet somehow a few devs seem to think that would be normal...

I understand the concern, but whole idea of the game is that you can use tools you want, instead of tools devs made to mimic the real life (which is actually what throws me away from things like A Normal Lost Phone - I like the idea, but the phone you are presented with is a sad joke). I know profesionals from DFIR (Digital Forensics & Incident Response) community who played TUSFitG using tools they use in their daily work. Unfortunately, there is no way to emulate real disk in a a way that makes it accesible on the system level without attaching it to the system - and that's where the admin rights are a must. Also note, that windows do exactly the same when you plug any USB stick into your computer, they just spare you the UAC warning.

People talking like a virtual drive couldnt give you a virus. Maybe a virtual drive running inside a virtual machine as it would only infect that virtual machine since its an emulation of running windows instead of your actual windows itself. basically this "game" is just a video that directs you to explore a folder added to your windows explorer as a virtual drive then read a lot..... a LOT of text. Like sure the disk image doesnt contain anything bootable... but it easily could contain an exe that would install something that was bootable
What I'm really wondering about is, whether the executable files actually work. Especially the torrents.
executables are just installation versions of programs, they are digitally signed so you can check they are original (think of them as of suggestions as to what software can come handy, you don't have to use them), no idea if the torrents are still active

It'd certainly be odd, to link a torrent as a part of a game on Steam.

Yeah, concern is exactly something any user should have when seeing a program of this kind needing admin rights, but in this case there shouldn't be anything to worry about. The USB drive (as far as I know) doesn't include anything bootable apart from some of the freeware files. I'd say that if this was dangerous, Steam would have caught it by now. And as that didn't happen nor was anything dangerous found within the files themselves, It proves that this is what it says it is - a game.

The executable files really work, and install real programs on your computer. Creepy and scary.

So why was that necessary in the first place? Couldn't they just have included the drive contents as normal files and given the player a shortcut to open the game folder?

Having it displayed as an actual drive might add an ounce of realism, but is that worth requiring admin permissions?

there some additional hints in deleted files, no way to allow their recovery without using a real disk

Fair point, that sure is a cool gimmick.
