If you was playing on the first slot, your save file should be 76561198056902770Slot0Save.sav, see if you have a file with that name. Check if it have a larger file size than 6KB (the size from a fresh save slot). If it have, it really should be your old save file and you should be okay (make a backup of this file to another folder, just in case). Start your game again, and even if it ask you to create another save slot, create it on the same slot you was using, and start the game. If it works, you should be back where you last played, with your progress recovered. The only thing that should not come back is your play time, it would be like a new save file.
If your save file was renamed to something else, try renaming back to 76561198056902770Slot0Save.sav, run the game, and again, even if it ask you to create another save slot, create on the same slot you was using, and start the game. You should be back where you last played, with your progress recovered.
And also, maybe Steam cloud could overwrite your save file when you are trying to recover it, so if that happens turn off Steam cloud for Crash 4 and try again. When it works, turn on Steam cloud again.
Thanks for the time you've dedicated to helping me !
