Armor shards

What do armor shards do? I can't see my armor rating anywhere in the hud.

Nah that is food (how satiated you are) I think the armor is just a troll and there is no armor afaik. Also another thing I noticed is I found this gattling/minigun looking weapon sprite a bunch of times but I can't pick it up or interact with it in any way.

It is indeed the thin grey line immediately to the right of your health bar. Hunger's on the far right, to clarify.

Every bar has a grey line to the right. For health, it's armor. For O2, it's bullet time. For hunger, it seems like it's a bar that makes it go down a little slower.
Armor absolutely matters. Every hit takes away 1HP and during the later levels, you'll get hurt for sure.

It goes up everytime you pick up an apple while at full hunger, and when it's full you get an extra ration, which can even go over the max of 10
