If you buy a game on Steam it should be able to be played through Steam. Looking at the Store page it says we have to link our Steam account to an Epic games account.. so if Epic games gets a data breach then that could compromise your Steam account. I'll pass.

You can play single player with no epic, just tested that on my Steam deck. No problem
What are u guys on about o.o I bought it on steam and played it on steam with my friend just. The Epic Games part i just clicked 1 button to allow it or somethin, and was on to the main menu. Literally had 1 click of inconvenience. (Maybe i already have Unreal linked to steam? idk)

The Steam Store page states it requires an Epic account:

Requires 3rd-Party Account: Epic Online Services (Supports Linking to Steam Account)
You can literally play without an Epic Account. In solo but still.

Been playing with my Fiancee though and loving the game.

Does it suck? Sure, but stop acting like this is something new.
EA and Ubisoft have done this for years - not to mention that you 'do' play it through Steam, you just have to log in with Epic, which is no worse than the games that have their own launchers.

Which means, EVERY developer or publisher can just open up their own websites where you need to have a account linked to the steam account and you would totally support this thought? Why? I mean.. why? You already know about the other bad anti consumer stuff that is going on and you SUPPORT even more anti consumer ♥♥♥♥? Why are you arguing "FOR" more anti consumer stuffs? What is your thought process with this?

"ah, what is one more, i don't care about this and this is why its ok"?

That would only happen if Valve's own API that allows account linking is so horribly written to the point of giving all those sites that do account linking with Steam actual control of your account.

The developers are using EOS because they are going to have the game be cross platform multi-player, which Steam does not provide. Currently Epic is the only company providing everything needed for cross platform functions, and they provide is freely.
