First off, OSRS is considered the "Past" of RS lore. This is proven through Anachronia in RS3, where the researchers say "We can no longer call it Fossil Island". Fossil Island is the Anachronia adjacent island in OSRS. There are plenty of other references to the "past" in RS3 which reference OSRS/RS2 lore, but Anachronia is perhaps the most prominent.
RSDW directly sequels events in RS3, with mentions of the events of World Wakes, Mighty Fall, and the World event of Armadyl and Bandos. There's plenty of lore drops through the scraps as well that uncover the past we never learned about even in OSRS/RS3, such as the exact events that unfold with Guthix discovering RuneCrafting.
We're looking at a full-on sequel to RS3 with sprinklings of information that date even before the First Age.
BUT
the game also sprinkles designs in from both games, such as the Abyssal Demon and Wise Old Man designs from RS2/OSRS, but the Vannaka and Zanik designs of RS3.
Even some of the gear follows one, the other, or even a mix of both (such as the Anti Dragon Shield and Dragonfire Shield designs being a mix of OSRS/RS3 inspired designs).
It's a pretty good mix of all adjacent source material if you ask me, a lot of people in this discussion might disagree though because they can't get past the game being a Survival Crafter, so it isn't "Runescape enough" lol
