How does the Battlestaff work?

It started as a fire thing, which was cool, I used all the charges on purpose to see what would happen and it seems to have become an air staff now? How does this work, can I change it at will?

You can open up the rune tab of your inventory to swap between fire or air runes for the spell choice, assuming you have some. Should be right click to swap I believe.

You can add the runes to your bar too so you can easily swap.
