Absolutely every one that has been playing online multiplayer games for more then a week, knows to NEVER, never play an open MP server that is not Pass-worded. If you do, you get what you get. Yea the scumbag that looted him blind was an ass, However if OP would have been solo. none of this would have happened. SO in conclusion, It is the OP's fault.

If you left your doors and windows wide open, yes, of course. This is only a computer game we're talking about, though, so pretty trivial overall. it's a painless way to learn a valuable lesson.
