Game failed?
I mean other recent titles had 500k + at release and this game only 40k looks rather underwhelming for a company with such a big name.
Did we really need another co op survival game?

Early access games tend to get less traction on start-up than full-releases. People tend to not join Early Access games as much because they're cautious and skeptical.
Also the Steam charts estimation says 145K not 40K.

For most sure but the real gems tend to keep a big player base for a long time.
In my opinion the numbers for this game all scream mediocre.

A few million runescape players are disappointed with this pathetic release designed for fin 12 yr olds.
4 player coop failed attempt survival crap wtf are they serious like we haven't gotten those enough already in the past few years.
But whatever go enjoy your kiddie game fanboi.
Nice. That's not too bad. I was expecting less with it being a shadow drop and early access.

Isn't Valheim still in EA? Also, OP is talking about peak players, not owner estimations. Since OP mentioned 500k, which is the peak player count of Valheim, the "to beat" goal in owner estimations would be 14 million, if we are comparing it to Valheim (the lowest estimation). 40k is still wrong, the current peak is 51k and that will definitely increase over the weekend. I don't think it's a failure at all. From what i've seen so far, this could become a pretty cool game, in my opinion.

I play games that have 5 active players at any given time and the devs still update them. What nonsense this is to judge a games performance on how many players there are. This is a modern phenomenon where people can't play and enjoy a game that isn't in the top 100 on steam.

When a game releases and i see a 80k+ peak that already dropped to 40k+ in just a day or 2 is a big red flag and only means one thing; mediocre garbage.

well you can play single player, but i agree, another coop survival game is the last thing we need.
