As a woman, I am not offended.
It's just body types lol, who cares, pick the one that fits you and move on. The only people offended by it are people who care too much about binary categorization.
You can choose Human Male, or Human Female...
And you get the same sized, same shaped Human regardless... And so does everyone else...
And every NPC in the game...
An entire game full of the same person over-and-over-and-over...
Well that's the thing, picking one that 'fits you' isn't really the point. What is a body type A and a body type B? Obviously these are proxys for Male and Female. It's just so strange to substitute out the names. It would be like every type of gatherable in the game being named 'Rock type 1', 'Rock type 2', 'Tree type 1', etc. I'm just asking if the devs would consider making the game more alive by removing modern blandness from character creator. More color options for hair and eyes would be good improvements too, though I know it's early on.
Almost all people are indifferent to type A type B
but there are a minority of people that the male/female naming is triggering.
Functionally nothing changes, but it makes the experience a little bit better for those who may be suffering from dysphoria.
That's about the start and end of it.
It does 'detract' from the exp in that way, yes.
I'm not sure if I'd buy the assumption that 'almost all people are indifferent to type A type B'. It might be true but I'm skeptical. I think the average response to seeing it 'that's odd' then checking to see which one is male and which one is female. It's like the removal of clarity for the sake of being unclear.
I'm also unsure how dysphoria is involved. Anyone is free to choose Male or Female. Cool thing about fantasy games is you can be stuff that you are not. I'm not a wizard but I can be one in this game which is rad! I just also believe that being a Body Type B Wizard is stranger and less immersive that being a Female Fire Wizard for example.
I think the argument for functionality is kind of moot. Hair style and color have no functional changes either, but it sure is nice to customize your character to look cool or whatever style you like.
Anyways, still can't see a good reason for erasing Males and Females from the creator for humans. I get it if they add some other races or something, that would make more sense.
