For example if you don't have a copper axe, you're not cutting Oak trees.
The same rule applies to stones and ores for Pickaxes and Rocksplosion.
If you start channeling your Axtral Projection spell, and line it up with trees, you can tell if you can cut them or not. Green highlit trees means they will be cut, and yellow means they will not be. Make sure to keep facing the direction of the trees to ensure they get cut.
