Taking damage when blocking.
This needs to change. This isn't some instant response time animation cancel type of game. If I put up the shield regardless for parry or not, I should not be taking any damage at all. That makes it pointless to have a shield.

If you're using the basic shield against goblins, its block power isn't enough.
It's good for kebbits.
Make the next shield and it has a far better blocking power.
Not all games negate all damage when blocking, they only negate SOME of the damage. This game is the same.
If you're just holding your shield or parry up, then you'll take some damage. If you quick time your press with the attack, you'll negate ALL of the damage and stun the opponent. It's to reward precision.

You know what, that actually makes sense. I would still prefer if my stamina went down first when blocking, but being that I never thought about block power as a factor I'll be a bit more understanding about it.. even if I still hate it lol

I always attempt to perfect parry attacks. The animations currently in the game can be a bit clunky, but I understand how that mechanic works. As another commenter mentioned, the blocking power might be too low which would make sense, but I would still prefer if that meant my stamina would get wasted faster. It kind of defeats the purpose of using a shield when you could just play without one for less weight and try to perfect parry using single or two handed weapons. More so I think this issue would be solved if the animations and timing of attacks was a bit cleaned up.
Chip damage has been a thing in mostly every game with shields. It still lowers the damage you would take massively. Currently in a power 3 zone. Stuff hurts. Shield lowers the pain lol.

If I'm honest I didn't even use a shield til Zone 4, and made an Iron shield. It's actually pretty heavy amount of Damage reduction just for blocking, let alone the negate on parry. Like for example, if I got hit by a Garou Berserker without the shield, I take nearly half my health in damage, but with blocking he barely dents my health at like 1/10th the damage. It's a huge reduction.

I believe the deduction is correspondent with the Tier of Shield, but all parries negate.
I'm honestly fine with the system as is, as it gives incentive to go for precision and practice patience.

Try the Shield spell, which blocks all damage, though it doesn't last all that long. It frees up a hotbar slot, too.

Hotbar slot? I just keep my shield in my inventory, and right-click it when I need to re-equip it. If I'm using melee though that's pretty rare so it stays on all the time.
I suppose it saves an inventory slot though.

At this point, you're are off just better pressing the dodge key. Enemies do not combo their attacks, so a poorly timed dodge will dodge all attacks with multiple enemies striking in close succession.

Using the shield spell allows you to block all damage and you can still parry with that shield. There is no reason to not use it if you're using a shield. It also takes no time at all to cast and can be cast in the middle of a fight.

I tend to dodge a lot, and I do a lot of weapon swapping mid-fight, but If I'm meleeing it's not hard for me to jsut pull up my inve and right click the shield. I'm used to quick swapping like that.

I love that spell. A lot of people keep mentioning the chip damage, which isn't what made me write this, even though I don't like that either, but it's the moments where I use my shield and I still take a huge amount of damage. I think there is some sort of animation issue that isn't letting the game register the block.
In real life if you block with a shield, you don't always take zero damage too, you know.
