RuneScape: Dragonwilds

Few things after finishing the game as it is now.
Stop if you don't want spoilers, even though there really isn't much to spoil at this point. Note: I am fully aware the game is in early access and I am sure that the bugs will be fixed in time.

I finished the game, or at least what content is available for the game at the moment. I killed the dragon twice, without dying, even on the first attempt. The attacks of all enemies are well telegraphed and simple to deal with once you fight an enemy 1 or 2 times. This carried over to the boss fight as well. While it was a cool fight, I would have enjoyed this much more if there was risk involved. I wasn't worried that if I died I would lose anything except for time and the materials required to craft the horn which at this point were cheap and easy to get. I am not even sure if the horn is lost if you die. All I would have to do is run back to the entrance of the fight and pick up my death box, gather the materials (which took at max 5 minutes) and then retry. But, I never died so I didn't have to worry about this. What I am really trying to get at is this game doesn't need Soulsborne level difficulty, but some challenge would be nice. Maybe also make the horn much more material demanding, would make the fight more meaningful, at least in my opinion. Again, don't know if you lose it on death.

On the topic of combat, stamina is way to punishing when dealing with groups. In the early game, it really wasn't an issue since I quickly adjusted to the system in place and dealing with two or three enemies became easy. The issue started to come up when I ventured into the Fractured Plains but became a nuisance in the Stormtouched Highlands. With the archers, druids and Berserkers teaming up it was a frustrating to manage stamina and still fight enemies. It resulted in weird pauses in combat of just strafing while regaining stamina. This is the only time I felt any sense of difficulty while playing the game. More difficulty is nice, but in this sense it wasn't ideal. I did learn to use potions and made sure I had buffs going whenever I entered combat, specially while in the Highlands, however it only felt like a band aid fix to the larger problem. I can see this being much easier with friends, but for my first go at the game I wanted to play it solo. Playing this solo, it was annoying.

While playing solo, I do hope that the ability to pause is added. It's ever so frustrating that game developers do not add the ability to pause, even when playing what is essentially a single player experience. I agreed for Jagex to collect my data, being cynical I would guess that this is a reason the ability to pause was not implemented. Being more optimistic, I hope this is a feature that is added in future updates as it would be a nice quality of life change.

Stormtoched Highlands, the lightning that strikes the ground is cool and a nice environmental hazard. Except, it seems to like to strike when you are performing an action that is unable to be cancelled. Casting the Rock blast spell, buffing your weapon, drinking and eating, taking a healing pot or reapplying armor. It happened so often while performing these actions and is clearly a targeted event. In my opinion, they just happen too frequently.

Raids are an inconvenience. They don't provide a good enough reward for fending off the Warband. When preparing to leave, the horn would sound and it was time to fight. However they were super easy to defeat once you at least had bronze gear/weapons. Maybe there is a larger idea in the works for the raids but at the moment it just feels like it's implemented to slow progression.

Gem drops are bugged, I spent a lot of time mining copper, a ton of time mining iron and barely mined gold and silver. Out of everything I mined, I received a grand total of ZERO gems. This was frustrating because I wanted to use a good bow, but was completely locked out of higher bow levels, only having access to the starting Ash bows simply because gems refused to drop. I don't even know if there is jewelry in the game at the moment because gems would not drop.

Materials sometimes clip into terrain and are unable to be gather from, this was most notable with ore veins. This was really whatever and really didn't hinder my experience. Luckily, with the system Jagex put in place for mining you could mine most of the ore available and there would only be one or two pieces you couldn't access. Very minor issue. I actually have to give Jagex a ton of credit here, I have played quite a few games like this style and they did a really good job making resources abundant and mostly accessible.

On a positive note, I experienced zero crashes, no frame drops at all. There was two instances of note. The abyssal demons are visually buggy, The abyssal demon looked like they are running at low frame rate while everything else in the world is running fine (I don't know how else to explain it). The only other visual bug I came across was pretty funny. A sheep got hit by lightning, there was a black line that came across the screen which quickly vanished and the sheep ended up with a black burnt stripe. Made me laugh as it was completely unexpected and I don't think it was intentional.

Is the vault in Stormtouched Highlands not there? I spent an hour looking for it and couldn't find the entrance. It could just be that my game was bugged and I couldn't see it or it isn't in the game yet. It was marked on my map and I found what I believed would be were the entrance would be but only found a wall of rock.

I know this will read as negative but I actually had a pretty good time playing this game and definitely will recommend it to anyone who likes a good survival game. The point of taking the time to type this all out was to provide some constructive criticism on what I think will eventually turn out to be one of the best survival games, even if I am just talking to the void :D. This game has great legs to stand on and I hope Jagex continues to work on this to make it great.

I agree on basically everything here. Nice!

The vault in Stormtouched Highlands is in a cave with stream of water going into it. You'll need to chop down some vines and mine some boulders to get to it.
Have you done the "Highlighting the problem" quest? It says "Investigate the areaa for clus about the statue and I can't seem to find any clues.

I found this one. You have to gather the clue from a statue hidden in the dungeon underneath the statue.
im not exactly a know-it-all gamer, this feed back feels really solid and I'm impressed by the amount of times you mentioned you never died. I'm just now getting bronze gear, and i'm dying constantly.
Solid write-up and I can't find much to disagree with.

Overall the timing on the three raid events (dragon, warband, hunted) do not seem integrated into the game beyond "if RNG GO!". The number of times a raid started before I was even out of bed, after re-spawning in bed, right after a different event, or while I was involved in another fight was disappointing. I've honestly warned people off the game as I know it will just make them quit (and likely angry they paid for the game).

I played through to the end, enjoyed it, but definite issues.

On the combat/spell animations, agree whole-heartedly. You can hear or see when something's happening, but far too many times I was stuck in the animation and couldn't do anything. With the 4-5 step combo on weapons, that's a long time to be stuck in a 'dance' while enemies are hitting you. Did not feel polished.

I will add that after killing Velgar, he still raided the village. I assumed it would be a basic Valheim-style trigger where killing the stage boss terminated some raids even if something else happened. Nope, Velgar still flying overhead puking poison on everything. Sometimes invisibly (but I could hear him).

The Vault in the Stormtouched Highlands is behind thorny vines in a stream well below the top of the hill path.

As I was coming around the west side, heading north and then turning east I had to cross a small bridge. Look north. The Vault entrance is inside the cave at the back and through another pile of stone you have to break. Well hidden. I will note this was the toughest vault for a reason you cited, there was one room with 6-7 vault guardians and stamina mgmt. was horrible, especially in close quarters, with fire traps behind me.
I agree with most of it except for the mining part. It's easily overshadowed by the fact that you can just use Rocksplosion close enough to the ones in the terrain and the auto radius pickup will get them once they break.
Good summary of the game, I agree with a lot of what you said. If you haven't found the vault entrance in stormtouch, the entry is where the river stops flowing.

This comment summed up my experience. I have every skill in the 40s. Plus, after you beat the dragon you get magic and range xp to lvl 20. Albeit, it doesn’t do anything. I made my house as cool as I could. I hope another update comes out soon. I feel like I’ve completed the game thus far. As someone with a 20 year continuous RuneScape account, I’m enjoying this game.
