Because Epic offers gaming servers companies can hire. In my exprience those are very stable. You don't even have to make an account, it will make an empty one if you dont want one purely so you can connect and it doesn't use the Epic Launcher.,

Well thats better than having to cretae an account really, so its just the servers? But what if they go down, can i still play the game solo?

If for whatever reason the servers went down you'd still be able to play offline just fine.

I've seen the Epic references before on other games; its NOT a big deal; its as FullMetalPanic explained above; basically these guys (logically) didnt see any need to reinvent the wheel for supporting the various aspects of coop/multiplayer and so they use an available set of 3rd-party code from Epic that is capable of supporting all aspects of it. They will handle its usage all under the covers; you'll never even know its there.

Tons of games you probably play already use it (Hades, Among Us etc)
