Best food and drink options?

I'm wondering what people find works best for them with food. Should I just kill chickens every time I see them? Berries were really common for a while, but now I'm finding more. Yet, I don't want to waste bones and claws. Should I just stick to plain water if I don't have berries?

Well, chickens drop Feathers, which are needed to make arrows, so I kill those on sight anyway. Boiled water does me fine for fluid intake, but I'm still discovering recipes by combining items. Mixed Grill, Berry Glazed Meat, etc., although I haven't tried most of the things I've made as yet.
