It's something I read. If true, it's a no deal. I'll wait till there's more content and it's worth it, maybe by then Epic is dropped or the game is good enough to warrant a stupid Epic account login.

You do not need an Epic Games Store account to play the game.

The game uses Epic Online Services - a completely unrelated service to the EGS - to manage servers/cross platform play. Epic Online Services have their own accounts that are not regular accounts - you do not create them and you don't need to manually login to them, ever. They're simply used by the game to authenticate you in servers and grab basic data from your steam account (username, profile picture, etc) for the game to use.
