If rust has taught me anything, foundation being upgraded is a start. Although, I don’t see anything in-game for material upgrades yet

There is no way to stop them. Only slow them.
The game has no built in defenses at this time. You can not dig trenches, put in spikes, or setup guard posts, Automated-Crossbow's etc.

-Upgrade your support beams to Heavier wood, Walls to Heavier/Rock/ etc.
-Build multiple layers of walls, further out away from main structures/storage.
-Be ready to fight at a moments notice.
-When you hear the Horn sound exit your base and run from it, the horde will focus on you and not your base. Kill them and then return.
-Build High, with many supports, into cliff sides etc. So that if they attack the base supports you have many supports to go through before anything falls.
-Make your path to your High Base quickly destroyable, so they can not climb up the stairs etc.
