Well now I just can't, in all good conscience, try this game.
I stumbled across this:
"Mod Doom clarifies the requirement is because its for the network framework that natively works within UE5 and allows for crossplay in the future but the game will launch and run entirely on steam."

"Hi there - the infrastructure we're using for online play is Epic Online Services. That's the framework that natively works with Unreal Engine 5 and allows us to lay the foundations for cross-platform play in the future. It'll launch and run entirely within Steam, no need to launch anything other than Steam - and, of course, the game!"

Very exciting, that Crossplay is likely to be coming to DragonWilds. That will mean lots of players for multiplayer!
