There will be settlements, memories of towns that once were. The world has moved on, but stories remain. You'll have lots of awesome places to explore and ruins to discover. Some of them containing ancient secrets...
I hope there are enough references, similarities, and/or direct 'typical' runescape content, because otherwise this game feels... not pointless, but I guess, at minimum, like a massive missed opportunity.
This game is so close to something child me dreamed of, and I have a feeling this game might just entirely blow past the dreams of many once-children, and attempt to fill a hole that never existed.
I like the idea of "uncovering" RuneScape as a concept, but without any RuneScape to begin with then... how is this RuneScape? What's the point?
RuneScape has cemented itself into the lives of millions, it created a unique game, with a unique style and presentation, a beautiful world and memorable characters, and has become thoroughly iconic on every level, and the first thing Jagex can think to do with it is just throw all of it away? We FINALLY get RuneScape in a modern twist, and it may not even be RuneScape. I genuinely don't understand.
I'm extremely critical of the game and likely won't be purchasing it myself (at this time), but to be fair the only way a RuneScape "survival" game could've been pulled off is with old lands being re-discovered. The primary continent on Gielinor (the world of RuneScape) is way too settled and civilized to house a proper survival environment.
Ashenfall (if I remember correctly) is an old continent that was just rediscovered, and the premise once more as I understand it is that volunteers have assembled an expedition to settle this new rediscovered continent.
Personally, I think the premise is good. What I personally dislike is the fact that the game has learned all the wrong lessons from Outward and Valheim: It has basebuilding like from Valheim - but there's no reason to. It has quests like from Outward, but they're even more shallow than in Outward.
Personally I don't see this as a survival game. I see it as a one-off action adventure game set in the RuneScape universe with survival elements. Currently overpriced for the amount of offered content.
If the total amount of content once the full game is released is vastly more than what's currently in the early access, then perhaps it'll be worth its pricetag, and in my personal opinion mostly for RuneScape players who are invested in the RuneScape universe.
