so even if i have no intention of ever using cross-play do i still need an epic account to play this?

You can play solo without epic, that's what I've been doing.

When in a solo world you do not connect to anything [no Epic Services] so do not need to 'connect' so no account needed. When connecting for multi player - friends or public - you connect to Epic Services. I have spoken to several other players about this and they confirmed that they DO NOT have Epic accounts and can still play as you do not connect through an Epic account! The game uses Epic Services for multi-play 'servers' only - no Epic account needed. When playing multi-player you simply need to agree to using Epic Services once and you can easily go to settings and opt out if desired [then just agree again if you need to].
