Are there better weapons?
I find it a bit weird that I am still running around with the 1h sword I found right in the beginning (the blood and rust one).
I have a pure strength build, level 22 now and I never found a better weapon that is 1h and has only str scaling.
I found an axe once, upped str to 28 to use it and it was crap. Super slow moveset, like a big 2h weapon with the first strike happening ages after clicking. Also I upgraded it to the same level as my sword and it just did a tiny amount more damage....not usable at all for me. I also found a 1h longsword which needs 42 str to wield...but it seems it also does not really do much more dmg on the same level.

I mean...I like my old, upgraded sword and it kills (also fast enough) ^^ But a bit more things to play with would really be nice.

The weapon progression is a bit strange. I'm in a similar boat, lvl 19 still using the mining pick I found in the first 20 minutes. I like that I can keep upgrading it, keeps it viable as the game scales, but it was such an investment it's hard to swap off. Furthermore, every new weapon wants 20-40 extra proficiency points and without a respec I'm wary of throwing my entire build into an unknown.

The stat system is a bit of a mess (hard to know what to prioritize) especially with weapon drops gated behind RNG.

They key is to put new runes on your weapon and add gems. I'm using the 1H Sword from the beginning as well, and I've seen a few other 1H swords, but it seems limited right now. I would look for that to be addressed in future releases. I'm very happy with what we have to start Act 1

My favorite weapon so far is the yellow one handed sword that drops from bosses/chest. Its 22str/22faith but has 4 skills with one of them being a long damage boost.

However when farming for a decent weapon I wouldnt bother upgrading anything right away, take it to the Eleanor and enchant first it to see if it rolls anything good before you waste materials on it

If you upgrade crafting people they sell you crafting recipes, might get a few options with the blacksmith.

I've max leveled to lvl 30 and am playing 1H Azure blade (I enchanted and got purple version), and have put a lot into strength and faith since that's it's scaling. Very powerful. By comparison, with sword fully upgraded, most two-handers are only a bit stronger in their base stats. Other swords have been dropping, but since i can't re-spec and they scale with different attributes, I'm pretty much stuck with this sword. Which is fine. I'd like, however, to see a respec option, so that you can try out other weapons without having to re-level character.

There are def better weapons, but my interpretation is that this another Souls inspiration (as opposed to Diablo/POE), where starter weapons remain at least viable if you keep upgrades maxed. I like it, and keep my starting set of daggers in the line up.

Thanks for the tip about crafting weapons at the balcksmith/anvil. I had a look what kind of recipes I have there and there was another Axe I could build and use. Its way better(faster, mainly) than the Axe I found, so I have another option to the sword now.

I think the game is not so focused on finding a better item, it's more focused on improving and customizing the one you already got.

Not sure what axe you're using, but greataxes have a quick running attack. Does less damage than normal attack, but you can do running attack and then combo with another attack right after.

I just got a Rusty Khopesh. A one-handed curved sword that scales only on strength. Initial damage (no upgrades, jewels or anything) starts at 24. Pretty fast good move set.

It all depends on your preferences, i dont like weapons that have a long wind up to attack, usually i get interrupted with those, never used them with high poise though, gotta test that, so far my best char was a level 30 sword and board using a bloody rusted sword, i didnt even like the governor sword, slower with a worse rune attack than the rusted.
