Everything is weapon-based.

There are staved to use magic, with actual magic.

There also swords that can use magic and all, you just gotta look for them.

there are spells but u need to find magic staff or unlock Eleanora shop in sacrament

buy the staff and put runes with spells you want to use, also to cast spells you need focus, so use focus potions as a "mana pots"

that magic in No Rest for the Wicked

Then they should at least let people choose their starting weapon. Unless there're some lore-wise reasons.

What do you mean "lore-wise" reason? The prologue has you wash ashore in tatters... what further "lore-wise" explanation do you need?

Regardless, the blacksmith carries every basic weapon afaik, so even if you didn't luck out on RNG, you only need to deal with a handful of enemies before you can just buy what you wanted from him.

Lore-wise reason means some settings like there's no magic outside of the island, so you can only get staves after reaching the place. Otherwise why forcing people to use melee weapon, no matter how short that period is.

You've been washed ashore following a shipwreck and you don't have a staff. That is both the practical and the "lore" reason why you cannot immediately cast spells.

You need a staff to cast spell, so I imagine they function as catalysts. Do you actually need everything to be spelt out explicitly?

There's a greatsword just lying on the beach, which can't be found anywhere on the ship, why can't there be a staff? The game is forcing people to do melee.

The staff, sword and weapons you get the first time on the beach seems to be randomised.

First time, I got a staff. Second time I got that 1 handed sword.

As someone else already pointed out - the starting weapon is randomized. It *could've* been a staff. It wasn't.

Are you saying it would made more sense lore-wise if your favourite weapon happened to wash ashore with you?

Finally, *ALL* weapons (including the staff) requires you to engage in melee. So absolutely - the game is forcing people to do melee. It's part of the combat experience.

All the starting weapons are on the ground as you get there and the vendors have them

That's funny. You need to exploit realm creating to just get a weapon you want.

Playing a spellcaster deffenetivly is viable, as most people have stated, the spells comes from the weapon runes, and most of them comes from the staffs.
Later in the game you unlock the possiblility to buy one if you are unlucky in not getting one drop.

I just cleared the crucible (EA end game content) using mainly spells.
And you don't need to melee to gain the focus, later you will unlock focus potions, focus stats etc which makes it so you don't need to even hit to get your focus back.

Hope this comment helps someone.

No, I mean if there's a greatsword just lying on the beach then there should've other types of weapon lying around so people could pick the weapon they like to use, including staff.

Loot from fixed locations is randomized is something I didn't expect. It's funny, in a bad way.
