Are people crazy lol you all do realize the best ARPG on the market currently are souls games !
Elden Ring is the highest rated APRG ! why are people so confused on what is a ARPG and instantly think of Isometric ARPG`s { that have basically lost all the mechanics of a ARPG} like diablo and path of exile these silly loot RNG mechanic gambolling machines !

RPG dose not mean stat blocks and number crunching lol it means playing a role in a world by influencing the narrative from a characters perspective and the word action is used to define action combat not crunching numbers but using physics to define hit feedback and blocking !

this in every sense of the word is a true isometric ARPG!

When a lot of people think of ARPG they think of Diablo and Diablo clones, not Soulsborne games

Genres, like all language, mean nothing unless everyone agrees on what it means. Historically, "ARPG" has been used to describe isometric RPGs like Diablo 2, Torchlight, Path of Exile, etc. More recently, the tag has been applied to RPGs with Action, which is pretty much all RPGs, so it's a label that now doesn't really mean anything.

Don't blame people for feeling like ARPG means Isometric RPG, because it meant that for decades. Now if someone says "ARPG" I don't know what they actually mean, which makes it useless.

In my culture, ARPG just stand for Action RPG, this just a general game type used to make different from transitional RPG or JRPG menu type things.
I really interested in if you guys see ARPG is a specific game type.

It's the same thing here in the States. But (as with all things) some folks just don't know any better. It's weird to see people imply ARPGs started with Diablo.

Diablo (like Wicked) is an isometric ARPG, with "isometric" just describing the PoV. There are still RPGs that are not ARPGs, like that little turn-based Baldur's Gate 3 game that snuck past everyone's radar fairly recently. /s

I think this game is awesome, it's very clever blend of Rougelite + Souls combat (a bit) + adventure/rpg + gathering/professions. I like the fact that the maps changes during time and more you play the more you unlock.

ARPG is just a action game with RPG lite mechanics. It use to mean game with real-time combat but that genre identifier would be absolutely useless now.

My take? Streamers that probably started playing games when Diablo I, II or III came out associate THAT specific type of ARPG with what an ARPG is and subsequently spread misinformation all over the place. Well, I'm 50 and they are all wrong. It's literally any action based RPG game (not turn based like many of the CRPGs past and present-think Ultima, Baldurs Gate1/2/3, Gold Box DnD games). I mean...it's IN THE NAME. ACTION and ROLE PLAYING GAME. This game is absolutely both. News Flash, a game like Mass Effect is ALSO an ARPG. Sure, it's subgenre is a 3rd person shooter but it's still an ARPG.

In some circles, ARPG means diablo like games, but I can see that those who don't grow up in this genre would be confused.

This game is not Roguelite. Just because the game could be difficulty, doesn't make it rogue directly.

It doesn't matter. Devs specifically called out Diablo and PoE, so naturally that's what we expected. Of course we also knew that the combat would be more skill-based, but what we got bears no resemblance to either Diablo or PoE, so what gives? Why didn't they just call out Elden Ring instead?

They also called out other games as well to be fair. like dark souls, monster hunter and even fighting games. They also said specifically they didn't want this game to be like other iso-arpgs.

For those lacking context, he's referring to a tweet Thomas Mahler made over a year ago:

"Our next project is going to be a make-or-break moment for Moon: Either we manage to revolutionize the ARPG genre or we'll slowly fade away into the distance. While that should be scared, I LOVE the challenge! Diablo, PoE, etc.: We're coming for you, may the best one win! :D"

And, of course, since then they have elaborated many times that they're unhappy with the direction the Diablo series eventually went and wanted to take ARPGs in a different direction with less spammy, more tactical combat. But apparently that information wasn't worth absorbing.

I'm curious what you thought "revolutionize the ARPG genre" meant, exactly. Like.. twice as much spam on the screen? Every mob dropping so much loot your inventory fills instantly? Conditional buffs that only activate every OTHER Tuesday? Even less storage space? (To be fair that last one is a Diablo issue and not PoE).

I guess I don't understand how you managed to catch one obscure tweet from a developer of Ori and the Blind Forest but somehow missed allllllll the other information available about this game. That is some pretty selective research.

Look at it this way, PoE2 has a block button, dodge with no CD, stagger bars, slow charging heavy attacks and quick light attacks.
If they were to take this combat system and slap it onto PoE1 (Something that was originally planned) would PoE1 suddenly stop being a ARPG/Diablo 2 clone?
It would just be the same old PoE with a proper combat system, no?

What i'm getting at is, I don't think dodge, block and parry is a genre. Its just a combat template that other genres are adopting.
Or maybe i'm wrong. I don't even know anymore.

PS: Moments ago I found a "unique" (gold) sword and sold it for peanuts at a vendor. Most PoE thing I ever seen.
