What's with the price?
It's funny how when early access first began the concept was basically cheap games that still needed a lot of development. Over time the price of these games have gone up and up, and now people are paying absurd amounts of money for games that aren't remotely finished yet. 40 bucks for an early access game USED to completely defeat the purpose of early access.

It just shows that over time you can get people to accept anything. Pretty soon "early access" games will be 70 bucks like AAA titles are. Completely unacceptable. Steam needs to step in and put a cap on what a studio can ask for an EA title, because 40 bucks is laughable.

So...what is the purpose of early access in your opinion?

Baldur's Gate 3 was 60 bucks when it released in early access. And that was 4 years ago.

I have the slight feeling that this is your actual problem: you just want a game for cheap.

You don't like the price? You can't afford the game? Then don't buy it and/or wait for a sale.

The devs are great btw, if you are paying 40 bucks that means they did localization, here in Brazil its 100 reais, something like 20 dollars, so yeah, any dev that uses no DRM, no MTX and do localization of prices its a dev i will support.

Products are worth whatever people are willing to pay for them. If you think it's not worth the money, then don't buy it.

Dont be dense, games used to be an expensive thing, cds and dvds, shipping, casing and printing of covers and manuals. Now everything is digital, the costs shouldnt be absurd, but hey, if you think piracy is not a matter of low income go ahead, see what will happen if they start thinking like you and games start to cost 100 dollars.

"Back then" development costs were barely existent. Nowadays dozens of people are working for multiple years on a single title. Don't be dense... *scnr

I just purchased the game because I like the development team and have noted their consistent early updates and overall communication with the community.

However I don’t understand why the OP gets a jester award and comments like their point isn’t a fair consideration for gamers. I’d imagine the average age of a gamer who posts on these forums to be around 30 years old and have careers. Yet gamers are pretty quick to accept the status quo and assume nothing could change in the future when it comes to the gaming industry and I genuinely couldn’t disagree more.

The amount of bloated budgets that get allocated to monetization techniques and development continue to erode overall quality control, optimization and game development. Some studios decide to take the early access money and just pocket and run, expand and build a studio without putting back much development into the game. EA isn’t even supposed to be focused on needing money as it’s more about having the community help make the games better. There’s a lot of studios starting to see their benchmarks not met due to the continued frustrations from their playerbase and that’s a good thing.

Again, this isn’t relevant in my opinion to this studio as they pour passion and quality into their projects and it’s evident from the first minute of loading up this game and their past projects. These studios that haven’t succumbed to the horrible predatory practices of other studios should be supported imo. But to question or be wary of a 40 dollar entrance fee to a partially done game is absolutely understandable and I don’t blame people that won’t budget that into their gaming decisions either. Just my .02.

Really, so back then when there were less programmers and whatnot to work on games it was cheaper?
Its cheaper now, there are a lot more people to hire now, a lot more indie devs, the gaming industry has become huge and the tec has become more accesible, and you think its way more expensive?
Not to mention that soon AI will do a lot of the work for them.

"Prior to the 1990s, game development budgets, when reported, typically were on the average of US$1–5 million, with known outliers. [...]
Some of the most expensive titles to develop around this time, approaching costs typical of major motion picture production budgets, included Final Fantasy VII in 1997 with an estimated budget of $40–45 million.

[...]

Costs slowing increased from 1–4 million in 2000, to over $5 million in 2006, then to over $20 million by 2010, followed by $50 million to $150 million by 2018, and $200 million and up by 2023. In some cases, several AAA games exceeded $1 billion to make, split between $500-$600M to develop and a similar amount for marketing."

(see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_development#Development_costs)

So...no: I don't think it's way more expensive. I know ;)

Galaxy brain over here. Production costs for games are higher now than they were back then, and the cost to buy them is almost the same as what it was 25 years ago, despite inflation going up.

Marketing, licensing (including the engine), legal fees and promotional costs are also way higher now. So if anyone is being dense, my guy, it's you.
