All other vendor upgrades other than inn, which makes a sense being side area, upgrade normally in the open town square rather than being behind a door transition. Blacksmith is perfect example of how this should be done--it starts small and every upgrade makes it bigger, adds new tool and improves visuals.
I much prefer to see all that material farming actually changing things in the town beyond just vendor inventory.
Well, it is one loading screen every time you go there. And you are going there very very often.
Also, I much prefer to see the evolution of the town square in the open rather than being hidden behind a door. Blacksmith at level 3 is massive iron forge that looks impressive, you clearly can see the result of you toil. Enchanting show is on the other hand just empty place with a door. The visual flair is personal taste so it is to each of their own, however, that loading screen will just be adding lots of downtime over the time.
