Gambling house, need help

I really tried but I hit the wall here. In the gambling house, once you encounter a cheat, I have no idea what to do. I need to mark the cards somehow, but I tried so many ways and it always leads to defeat.
Please help:(

Take a look at a few of the high cards - you will find that he already marked those. Wouldn't it be a shame if a bunch of low cards had the exact same mark?

I've tried doing exactly this but it still leads to losing the next hand and then the cheat storms out and "leaves his winnings" but i have gotten none of my money back. I don't understand what i am missing here.

I already finished the game a while ago, but if I remember correctly, you just need to paint low cards with the same symbol as the high cards and play to win.

I failed this mission the first time, and repeat tries aren't working. as soon as the fellow cheater cheats, there is no card painting minigame, the comte jumps the gun, and we all go to jail. do i have to throw the first round, or am I just bugged?
