Was there supposed to be something in the big book?
Act 1 has you seeking a library so you can read a big book.
Unlike the lots of small notes in the game, the big book had no text in it.

I clicked it, a boss spawned, and then I did the rest of the dungeon.

So was I supposed to learn anything from it? Act 2 starts with "and then, he decided to go seek Mr. Grimwine", and I felt like I missed an episode.

it actually opens the path to the tower where the mandatory key is for opening the way to black house bog. and act 2 starts with you taking the boat to grimwine but crashing due to a snowstorm that happened, you cleared the plague but now face snowsotrms and the cold

Where exactly is the door for the skeleton key?

like i said in the tower after you touched to book and the archivist appears, you dont have ot beat it but doing so will reward oyu with a mana stone for ecnahnting your spells, the tower isnt missable its the staircase that looks destroyed ( from the book to the right)

I know. I'm confused that the story doesn't explain any of it. Also, Grimwine is a person, in case you confused it with the town of Grey Watch.

You'd think finding the book would be a reveal and push the story forward somehow, but we learn nothing after fulfilling that objective. He was supposed to search for information about his magic, revival, and so on. We don't even get a journal entry saying "I didn't find anything in the library, what a bummer!".

Instead, John Graven decides, "now I'm gonna go burn a house people wanted to burn back in the day".

did you skip the intro when you start the game? you are looking for anwsers why you are left alive and your daughter and wife have been killed by the order. the book is part of the anwsers you look for and if you read the journals on each location you will understand why you started in cruxfirth , he also didnt just wanted to burn the house, but the evil plague roots that were inside. that blocked the way out of town ( and some sertain secret areas i now have missed going unintentionally to act 2) and yeah i know grimwine is a person.

You aren’t really alive, pretty sure he’s in some alternate realm or something and his adopted daughter dies. Then you just appear at a location with a plague and that’s it.

Yes, and you find the book, you interact with it, and no text whatsoever appears on the screen or in the notebook. It didn't do anything in my playthrough. It was a lever to trigger the ghost miniboss to spawn.

Act 1 never explains why you started in Cruxfirth. You awake there surprised to be alive. You remember the town having a library so you seek it out.

You solve the plague because there's nothing else for you to do. You can't leave town with it in place, and people need someone with combat skills.

Adopted daughter. No wife.

And, there should be a journal update after interacting with the book in the Library.

Do you remember which one this was?
I remember being surprised that the library quest simply got struck off in the journal.
I think that's where you get the quest to burn the old house, hoping to kill the plague. However, I was under the impression we're looking for the library to look into our case, not that of the plague. Did I misunderstand the notes?

I think your looking to deep into a plot that is isn’t greatly communicated or barely the driving force.

Its in first entry of Archives quest. He says 'what happened that night (daughter sacrifice i think, not desert nap) or clue for illness maybe both.
He prity much found nothing but killed groundskeeper and legion of cultists so he went to trample their living tree cause trees are affraid of fire and smart tree must live in fireproof house.

no the book lead you to grimwine another orthogonal order priest which is why you toke to boat to the next act, but the boat got destroyed by the blizzard as you arrive and thrown you off the boat, i also got to the grimwine mansion part but was confused as i used some of the keys i got in act 1 but couldnt use cause i unintentionally got to act 2

you also shouldnt just rush trough the acts as it was a normal shooter but actually need to explore every possible secret and clue. i missed a note then found it because i backtracked an area for finding out where to go after i got the ice spell, and afterwards accidently got to crimwines castle entrance/bridge

I must investigate the house in the northern bog. Though I am hesitant to consider a building a culprit, do spores not travel this way? Disease upon rats following caravans? There may be at least one answer to all these riddles. A tree with roots and trunk of flesh, which may expose its heart when seared. I've seen its roots spread far and deep. A house that does not burn is a logical home for such an abomination. I shall explore the Archivist's chambers for a way beyond the literal labyrinth.
