I tamed a horse and am wondering if I need to put grass or anything in its inventory or if it just grazes.

Horses are fine if you just let them stand around or put them in a stable. However, if you actually want to ride out they need food like grass or bark, but better would be the crude fodder you can simply craft from your inventory. Once you unlocked that in taming, of course.

Till then, just give them the bark, gras and wildflowers you find and don't need

where in eastern island can you even find horses? In central island horses seem to be far more abundant.

To answer your question, you need to keep grass in its inventory if your horse is out and about. if you keep your horse in a staple, then you need to put grass in staple. Horses dont graze on their own.

As the above person mentioned, it's not only just grass, bark and flowers work too.

They need fodder or they starve. Either in their inventory or the stable. Fodder is great as it gives EXP and your horse will slowly level... but they take literally take real life hours to consume even 1 piece of fodder(when you log out/quit game) .
